  • Grooming

Food is very important for rabbits because rabbits have very sensitive intestines. Bad things can happen to your rabbit if you feed it the wrong way. Note: Rabbits are group animals and it is best to keep them in pairs or more.

What is most important to your rabbit

A bowl of mixed rabbit food is definitely not enough for every day.
These foods should be available to your rabbit throughout the day:

Bikes

These are brown or green rods. It contains many nutrients that your rabbit needs. Your rabbit will not get fat from bikes, your rabbit will get fat from all the fatteners and dyes that are in mixed food. Give a maximum of 25 grams per kg of your rabbit’s body weight (weigh your rabbit for this.

Hay

This is the most important thing you can give your rabbit, this is because rabbits are naturally herbivores and their intestines are made to digest fibrous food, hay is very high in fiber. It contains all the nutrients your rabbit needs per day. Therefore, make sure that your rabbit has access to this unlimited 24 hours a day.

Green food

You should get your rabbits used to green food slowly and you should not give your rabbit too much of this. It contains a lot of sugars which makes your rabbit fat quickly, so give it in moderation. The slow build-up of vegetable feeding is important for both young and older rabbits. It is important not to give too much: a carrot every day will eventually make your rabbit sick, it contains a lot of sugars.

Many variations

It is best to give your rabbit many types of food, for example, six types of vegetables. Don’t give too much of this. Giving many kinds (in moderation) is better than giving a lot of one kind. Rabbits also eat varied food in nature and it prevents a gas belly.
For example one sprig of basil, one sprig of celery, one slice of endive instead of a meal of basil, and the next day a meal of celery and the day after a meal of endive. If you give a little bit of everything, this is the same as a whole meal.

Good vegetables

Here are all the vegetables your rabbit can eat:

  • Endive
  • Broccoli (little)
  • Kale (little)
  • Cauliflower (little)
  • Fennel
  • Celery
  • Celery tuber
  • Kohlrabi
  • chicory
  • Lamb’s lettuce
  • Watercress
  • Paksoy
  • Mustard leaves
  • Raspberry leaves
  • Dandelion leaf
  • Carrot and the tops of carrots
  • Celery sprig
  • Sprig of parsley

Pay attention

Cabbage

If you give too much cabbage, your rabbit can quickly get gas in its stomach, your rabbit is allowed to use these types of cabbage, but beware: not much! Preferably don’t give it.

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Kale

Root

Rabbits don’t like a lot of carrots because they are real thickness makers. It contains a lot of sugar and your rabbit can suffer from diarrhea.

Good herbs and plants

Here are all the good herbs and plants your rabbit should eat:

  • Nettles, leave these for a day so that the fire goes out,
  • Wild Achillea, this is very good for disorders and digestion,
  • Plantain, it contains a lot of protein.

Dandelions

You can give dandelions, but never pick them along the road because of the harmful car substances and animal excrement. This can give your rabbit worms. Make sure that no poison is sprayed where you pick the dandelions.

Bad vegetables

Here are all the vegetables your rabbit shouldn’t eat:

  • Leeks
  • Onion
  • Chives
  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Maize
  • Solid cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Wet grass (never cut grass)
  • Don’t give too much clover

Extras

Fruit

You can only give fruit in moderation because it contains a lot of sugars. Give really little of it, preferably a piece or wedge. Here are the types of fruits that rabbits are allowed:

Reading suggestions; Rabbit Diseases and; All You Need To Know

  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Banana
  • Any fruit your rabbit likes, even with the skin on

Pay attention:

Apple seeds

Apple seeds are poisonous, do not give them.

Banana

Give a small slice of banana a few times a week, not more often. Banana contains a lot of potassium and that can cause heart problems if you give it too much and too often.

Bread

Rabbits like bread, especially hard stale bread. You should also not give this too much as it will make them fat.

Grooming

Rabbits are group animals, many people forget this. A rabbit is not happier when it is alone in a cage. Therefore, make sure that your rabbit always has a size and that he is not in a cage that is too small. A cage of one meter long is definitely not big for one rabbit, which is even very tight when you consider that rabbits in the wild walk, run, and play a lot
